Annual Sir Samuel Mico Commemoration Service

Among many other provisions in his will, Sir Samuel said:

To the Corporacon of Weymouth and Melcome Regis in the County of Dorsett I give ffive hundred pounds of lawfull money of England to be layd out in land, the profitts whereof to be bestowed Twenty shillings yearly or some good summe that they shall yearly choose when he hath preached a sermon in the Church of Melcombe aforesaid on the ffryday immediatly before Palme Sunday every yeare

As well as financially helping young people in the area to advance in life, the Mico Trust continues to honour Sir Samuel’s wish for a church service every year on the Friday before Palm Sunday. This year it will be on 12 April, in St Mary’s Church, beginning at 11.00 am.

The church will be full, with trustees, local dignitaries, descendants of Sir Samuel, past recipients of Mico support and above all young people who have recently benefited from the Trust – and who report on their progress.

Sir Samuel himself will also be present, in a way, through his coat of arms, which will be garlanded with a laurel wreath.

After the service, everybody processes formally to the George Inn to remember Sir Samuel with a glass of something and a hot-cross bun.
