In association with major charity The Smallpeice Trust, the Sir Samuel Mico Charities (SSM) are able to offer a range of special awards in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The Smallpeice Trust was founded more than 50 years ago to encourage young people to take an interest in science and engineering. Participating students develop employability skills including problem solving, lateral thinking, team building, time management, enterprise and presentation skills.
The Smallpeice Trust offers programmes to students at four levels, from taster sessions (known as STEM Days) in schools right up to highly prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarships for A-Level students, and the SSM is pleased to be able to provide financial support to students at the upper three levels.
Engineering and Scholarship Bootcamps
The Engineering and Scholarship Bootcamps take place during the summer half-term breaks at The Tank Museum, Bovington., and they are designed for students nominated by their teachers on the basis of their performance at a STEM Day.During the Bootcamp students will work in groups on a hands-on engineering project. They will then present it to a panel of experts acting as “potential investors”.
As well as Smallpeice specialists, ambassadors from engineering companies will be present at the Bootcamp and ready to answer questions and share their experience to help students gain a better understanding of how to secure a career in engineering.
Students will be briefed on the Arkwright Engineering Scholarships selection process, giving them valuable information on what will be required to complete the application form, excel in the aptitude examination and impress at the interview.
This year the Bootcamps will take place on 29 May 2019. The Mico Trust is able to fund up to 15 local students, and students seeking financial support should apply in the usual way, using the application form on this website..
Residential Courses
We are also offering up to 10 places (for five female students and five male students, aged 13-14) on a Future Marine Engineering residential course at Southampton University from 27 July 2019 to 1 August 2019.
Each course has four key components:
– Practical, industry-based engineering projects such as designing and building a vehicle, to develop skills in engineering, mathematics and budgeting
– Project mentoring by engineers from world-leading companies and scientists from industry
– Experience of meeting other students from all walks of life
– Information on routes into STEM careers
Students on a Residential Course will be fully supported throughout by a specialist education officer DBS-checked and trained in first aid and DBS-checked supervisors available 24 hours a day, plus university academics and role models from industry.
Students and their parents and teachers will receive a report on their performance.

Arkwright Engineering Scholarships
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships scheme began in 1991 when a group of committed head teachers determined that design and technology lacked the profile it needed to attract the highest calibre engineers and designers. And nowadays an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is at the very pinnacle of Smallpeice Trust awards.
An applicant needs endorsement from his/her teachers; the award carries the highest prestige; and those winning a scholarship gain a great advantage in their university studies, with regular monitoring, a mentor from the engineering world to guide them and a programme of CV-enhancing activities and events over the course of two years.
In addition, during this period the student will be formally presented with the Scholarship at a high-distinction Awards Ceremony in London.
Applications for the scholarships are highly competitive. But all students with a real interest in STEM are encouraged to take this up with their teachers, as all applicants will benefit from the experience of the rigorous selection process, from the application form through the aptitude examination to the final interview.
The SSM is pleased to be able to fund two Arkwright Engineering Scholarships commencing in September 2020.
